I Couldn’t Find the Right Education for My Son—So I Built It Myself
I was a dedicated educator before I was a mother. I spent a decade in classrooms, believing in the power of education to shape young minds. But when my son was diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, and ODD, I personally saw the cracks in the system; not as a teacher, but as a mother desperate to help her child thrive.
I tried everything. I fought for accommodations. I explored alternative schools. I even co-founded my own private school, believing that if I could create the right environment, surely it would work. But no matter how much I adjusted, compromised, or advocated, one painful truth remained: general education isn’t designed for every child.
As a single mother, I faced an impossible choice: continue forcing my son to fit into a system that didn’t understand him, or walk away and create something new. I chose the second harder path because he deserved more than just survival. He deserved joy, curiosity, and the freedom to learn in a way that made sense to him.
At first, I felt lost. There was no roadmap, no guide to homeschooling a neurodivergent child who didn’t fit into neat categories. So I experimented, adapted, and built my own tools:
